Early Years
Timothy Seth Avett, known professionally as Seth Avett, was born on July 30, 1980, in Charlotte, North Carolina, the youngest of Jim and Susan (Gleason) Avett's three children. Jim owned a welding business, and Susie was an elementary school teacher. Seth and his siblings, Scott and Bonnie, harmonized together as children—their grandmother being a concert pianist and their father being skilled on the guitar.
As a teenager, Seth attended Mount Pleasant High School and joined the band Margo while Scott was playing with the band Nemo. In 1998, the two bands merged under the name Nemo. Before Nemo dissolved, Seth and Scott had put together their own band, The Avett Brothers.

After Bob Crawford – formerly a bassist for The Memphis Quick 50 – joined the Avett Brothers in 2002, the band released their studio album "Country Was." Ten additional albums followed; "A Carolina Jubilee" in 2003, "Mignonette" in 2004, "Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions" in 2006, "Emotionalism" in 2007 – which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart – "I and Love and You" in 2009 – which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Folk Albums chart – "The Carpenter" in 2012, "Magpie and the Dandelion" in 2013 – which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Folk Albums chart and number five on the US Billboard 200 chart – "True Sadness" in 2016 – which brought the Avett Brothers back to the top of the US Billboard Folk Albums chart and landed them on top of the US Billboard Top Rock Albums chart as well – "Closer Than Together" in 2019 and "The Avett Brothers" in 2024 which peaked at number 134 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
The Avett Brothers touring band consists of Seth on lead vocals, piano, and hi-hat; Scott on lead vocals, banjo, guitar, piano, and kick drum; Bob Crawford on double bass, electric bass, violin and background vocals; Joe Kwon on cello and background vocals; former Dashboard Confessional member Mike Marsh on drums; Tania Elizabeth on fiddle; and Seth and Scott's sister Bonnie Avett-Rini on piano.

Clips of music by The Avett Brothers can be heard on numerous television shows and films. The romantic comedy film "This Is 40" included the band's song "Live and Die" on its soundtrack. The American sports television series "Friday Night Lights" used the song "If It's the Beaches" on season two and included the track on their soundtrack album "Friday Night Lights Vol. 2." The American dramatic television series "One Tree Hill" featured the song "I and Love and You" on an episode from season seven.
The American documentary television series "World of Jenks" featured the Avett Brothers song "Kick Drum Heart" on a second season episode, while the American family drama television series "Parenthood" featured the band's songs on five episodes.

The Avett Brothers appeared in the 2017 documentary The American Epic Sessions, which featured the restoration of a 1925 electrical sound recording system and the 20 musical artists who attempted to record songs on it.
"May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers" premiered on HBO on January 29, 2018. Filmed over two years, the intimate documentary charts the rise of two humble but greatly talented musical siblings.
"Swept Away" is a jukebox musical featuring the music of the Avett Brothers. It premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California, in 2022 before moving on to the Arena Stage regional theater in Washington, D.C., where it was performed until January 14, 2024. On November 19, 2024, it opened at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway.
Awards & Nominations
From 2007 to 2023, The Avett Brothers were nominated for nine Americana Music Awards. Of those, they won Emerging Artist of the Year, Duo/Group of the Year – in 2007, 2010, and 2011 – and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The band has been nominated for four Grammy Awards: Best American Album for "The Carpenter" in 2013; Best American Roots Performance for the song "Ain't No Man" and Best American Album for "True Sadness" in 2017; and Best Recording Package for "The Avett Brothers" in 2025.
Going Solo
Seth Avett has released four solo albums; "To Make the World Quiet" in 2001, "Killing the Headlamps" in 2022, "The Mourning, The Silver, The Bell" in 2006, and "IV" in 2017.
In 2015, he paired with American singer and songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield to record the album "Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith."

Simple Family Roots
When Seth Avett's father retired from welding, he turned toward a career as a country singer and guitarist. All three of his children appeared in his gospel album "Jim Avett & Family," released in 2008. Jim has released a handful of additional albums and regularly performs on tour. His latest album is "Trains Don't Come Here Anymore."
Jim lives on a farm in North Carolina and, in an interview with Our State magazine, said that Scott and Seth still come home to help him with haying.
Personal Life
Seth Avett married Susan Adkins in 2008, and they divorced in 2013. In 2015, he became engaged to American actress Jennifer Carpenter, who became a scream queen when she played Emily Rose in the 2005 American horror film "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." She went on to star as Debra Morgan in the television miniseries "Dexter: New Blood."
The couple married in a small, private ceremony in North Carolina over the Memorial Day weekend of 2016. Only a handful of friends and family members were in attendance. The two first met at a concert in 2009 and had been friends for several years before their relationship took a romantic turn. They have a son named Isaac, who was born in 2015.
