Hinton authored her first novel, The Outsiders while in high school and it was published in 1967. She also wrote the novels That Was Then, This Is Now in 1971, Rumble Fish in 1975, Tex in 1979, and Taming the Star Runner in 1988. Hinton authored the children's books Big David, Little David and The Puppy Sister in 1995. She has also written the adult fiction works Hawkes Harbor in 2004 and Some of Tim's Stories in 2007. Her autobiography Great Women Writers was co-authored by Rita Dove and Maya Angelou in 1999. She won the inaugural Margaret Edwards Award in 1988 and was inducted into the Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame in 1998.
