Pleasant Rowland was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1941. Rowland has redeveloped historic properties in the area of Aurora, New York and created a partnership with her alma mater Wells College. Rowland worked as a school teacher in the 1960s and then as a reporter and anchor for an ABC affiliate. She became a textbook writer and was the publisher of Children's Magazine Guide. She founded the Pleasant Company in 1986. The company makes American Girl dolls, accessories, and books. Rowland sold the company to Mattel in 1998 for $700 million. In 2001 she purchased the bankrupt MacKenzie-Childs and then sold it in 2008. Rowland founded the Rowland Reading Foundation in 2004. Pleasant and her husband Jerome Frautschi donated a $205 million gift to build the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisconsin. Rowland is one of America's richest self-made women.
