Curtis' best known works include Bud, Not Buddy and The Watson Go to Birmingham – 1963. After graduating high school he joined the theatrical and musical group Suitcase Theater which performed around the world. Curtis later went back to graduate from the University of Michigan-Flint in 2000. He worked for 13 years on an assembly line in Flint's Fisher Body Plant #1. His first published book was The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 in 1996.
It was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal and was named one of the New York Public Library's 100 Great Children's Books of the Last 100 Years. His next book was Bud, Not Buddy published in 1999.
