Television Career

Wayans made her television debut in 1987, playing the recurring role of Allison in the first season of the NBC sitcom "A Different World." She went on to have guest roles on "China Beach" and "Dream On." Wayans had her breakthrough in 1990 as one of the original cast members of the Fox sketch comedy series "In Living Color," which was created by her brother Keenen, who was also in the cast. The other original cast members included another brother, Damon, as well as Jim Carrey, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh, Kelly Coffield, and Kim Coles. On "In Living Color," Kim Wayans played such notable characters as Benita Butrell and Mrs. Brooks, and did impressions of such celebrities as Grace Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Tracy Chapman, Whitney Houston, and Dionne Warwick. Wayans's first roles on the big screen consisted of brief parts in the late-1980s films "Hollywood Shuffle" and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." She had more substantial roles in the 1990s, beginning with a starring role in the 1994 film "Talking About Sex." Also that year, Wayans appeared in "Floundering" and her brother Keenen's "A Low Down Dirty Shame." In 1996, she appeared alongside her brothers Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen in "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood."

In 2002, Wayans played basketball player Latisha Jansen in the sports dramedy "Juwanna Mann." Later in the decade, she played Ms. Dontwannabebothered in the musical comedy "Dance Flick," written by and starring many members of the Wayans family. She transitioned away from comedy in 2011 when she appeared in the acclaimed independent drama "Pariah," playing the mother of Adepero Oduye's protagonist. She was later in the 2017 romantic drama "Ray Meets Helen."

Wayans is married to Kevin Knotts. Together, they wrote a series of children's books called "Amy Hodgepodge," about a multiracial girl adjusting to public schooling after being homeschooled for many years.
