Gary Dahl was born in Bottineau, North Dakota in December 1936 and passed away in March 2015. Dahl is best known for being the creator of the Pet Rock. He joked about a rock being the perfect pet which led him to the idea of selling rocks as pets. The fad was popular in 1975 but only lasted about a year and came with an instruction book. The Pet Rock was one of the best-selling novelty items in the 1976 Christmas season. In the first three months after being launched, the Pet rock generated more than $2 million in revenue.
Dahl used the money he made from the Pet Rock to open a bar in Los Gatos, California. He later sold Sand Breeding Kits and Red China Dirt although neither was very successful. His agency Gary Dahl Creative Services specialized in electronic advertising. He wrote and produced many radio and television commercials. In 2007 he authored the book Advertising For Dummies from the For Dummies series. Gary Dahl passed away on March 23, 2015 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the age of 78.
