Sergei Popov is a Russian entrepreneur who has a net worth of $5.5 billion. Born Sergei Viktorovich Popov in 1971, he made his assets from MDM Industrial Group. After graduating from the Ural Polytechnic Institute with a specialization in power engineering, Popov joined the Ural-Siberian Commercial and Industrial Company in 1993. Three years later, together with Andrei Melnichenko, they founded MDM business Concern. At the beginning, Popov was a partner and business manager of the company, but soon in 2000, he became a founding member of MDM Industrial Group.
Furthermore, together with his partner, Popov and Melnichenko created TMK, Russia's major pipe exporter, SUEK, an independent coal producer, and Eurochem, the largest mineral fertilizer maker in the country. In 2006, the duo started to divide their assets, and the process finally finished in 2012. Once done with the splitting, Popov focused on banking, and he has made a huge merger with banking mogul Igor Kim's Siberian Ursa Bank. Now, Popov owns 77% of MSM Bank, and almost 50% of SUEK.
