Azizi was elected as a member of the Tanzanian parliament in 1993 on behalf of the Igunga constituency. In 2011 he resigned for Parliament and the National Executive Committee of ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi. Azizi is reported to be the wealthiest person in Tanzania.

Rostam sold a 17.2% stake in Tanzania's largest mobile phone operator Vodacom Tanzania for $250 million and still owns 17.8% of the company. He is also involved with the largest mining firm in Tanzania Caspian Mining and owns residential and commercial real estate. Azizi is the first billionaire in Tanzania.
