The founder of the power and utility company called ATCO Group, which now has more than 9,400 employees and assets of approximately $16 billion, Ronald Southern is one of the richest people in Canada. A graduate of the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in medicine, Southern decided to start his own business in 1947 when he and his father each put in $2,000 in the original Alberta Trailer Hire Co. which later became ATCO. First, the two purchased fifteen utility trailers and rented them out in the Calgary area, after which they started importing and marketing mobile homes in the States.
In the 1970's, the father-and-son duo expanded their operations into the oil and gas business, and a decade later they later moved into electricity as well.
