In 2008 her family's Banco Itau merged with Unibanco to form Itau Unibanco, today the second biggest bank in Brazil.
As a family member, Maria de Lourdes Egydio Villela serves as vice chairwoman of the board of Itausa Investments, a unit of the giant bank, as well as she is one of the bank's largest individual shareholders. On top of that, she is the president of Sao Paulo's Museum of Modern Art.
