Having graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Geology from the University of Manitoba, Riddell started his career as a geologist with Chevron in 1959. After ten years, Clayton aka "Clay" left Chevron to start his own business, C.H. Riddell Geological Consultants Ltd. Then in 1974, Clay established his private firm Paramount Oil & Gas Ltd. Four years later, he decided to incorporate Paramount Resources Ltd., plus he sold 40% of the company to the public in an IPO, raising $5 million. Even though he has stakes in more than five Canadian energy companies, his major investment is still Paramount Resources, which assumed total control of ProspEx Resources in April 2011. Also, Riddell owns a partial stake in the Calgary Flames, as well as high-end Calgary restaurant Catch. Among other things, Clay was named president of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and chair of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.
