Andrei Kozitsyn joined the billionaires' circles as the head of copper producer Urals Mining and Metals Company (UMMC, also known as UGMK). Born and raised in the Urals, he studied metallurgy and he first started to work as a mechanic at Uralelectromed, now UMMC's main factory. Having joined UMMC in 1979, he gradually rose through the ranks becoming a director in 1995.
Under his seven-year directorship, the factory expanded its operations beyond mining and metals also managing agricultural, construction and telecom companies in the Urals. As close business partner to billionaire Iskander Makhmudov, Andrei Kozitsyn was assisted by him when it comes to building holdings in Urals mining and metallurgy. In 2013, UMMC strengthened its controlling stake in Transgroup AS, a company that transports both commodities and passengers. The above deal resulted in Kozitsyn earning a stake in a transport business owned by Makhmudov.
