Anatoly Sedykh is a Russian entrepreneur who has a net worth of $1.7 billion. Born Anatoly Mikhailovich Sedykh in 1964, he is the Head of the United Metallurgical Company (UMC), Russia's second pipe producer and largest manufacturer of train wheels. Holding a degree in Science and Engineering from the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys, and a doctorate in Economics, Sedykh started his career as an economist in Central Research Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy. In 1989, he launched a joint venture in scrap-metal recycling with a loan of $1.5 million from Russia's leading bank, Sberbank. Then, Sedykh started buying stocks in Vyksuncky Steel Works (VSW), a pipe producer in the Urals region.
By 1999, together with his partners, he became one of the controlling shareholders of the company. Moreover, Sedykh served as Director General and Chairman of VSW, and under his leadership, the company successfully managed to escape from a huge crisis in a short period of time. Eventually, Sedykh established the United Metallurgical Company, which last year struck a deal with the state monopoly Russian Railways to extend their wheel contract for a record of 12 more years. In addition, the company has signed two more huge deals: it will be supplying a gas pipeline to Germany and an oil pipeline to China.
