He is the president and founder of the motion picture production and financing company Gilbert Films out of Los Angeles, California. He is also the co-owner of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers with his brother Dan Gilbert.

In October 2018, Gary spent $26.5 million to buy an 8-bedroom home in Beverly Hills, California. Gary bought the house from internet technology entrepreneur Jared Pobre who is perhaps most famous for being married to WWE star Stacy Keibler.

He owns a second Beverly Hills mansion which he acquired in the early 2000s. Today this home is worth at least $10 million.

In October 2021 Gary paid $17.5 million for an ocean-front mansion in Malibu.
