He began wrestling in Montreal in 1985 for Gino Brito and Dino Bravo. He later created The Samoan Swat Team with his cousin via the World Wrestling Council. They were renamed The Headshrinkers after signing to the World Wrestling Federation. After his cousin's departure due to injuries, Fatu went on as a solo wrestler, participating in the independent circuit and later returning to the WWE.

He is a member of the Anoa'i family and has a twin brother by the name of Sam Fatu. Solofa Fatu has a set of twins of his own by the names of Jonathan and Joshua Samuel. He has five children overall. Fatu's other ring names include Alofa the Polynesian Prince, Headshrinker Fatu, J.R. Smooth, Junior Fatu, Kishi, Rikishi, Riki-Shi, Rikishi Fatu, and The Sultan.
