In 2001, he made his Ligue 1 debut.

After a season in Ligue 2 in which he scored 13 goals in 34 matches, Adebayor moved on. From 2003 to 2006, he played for Monaco. In 2006, Emmanuel signed on with Arsenal, where he was nicknamed "Baby Kanu" by the club's manager for his resemblance to player Nwankwo Kanu. Upon joining Olimpia Asunción in 2020, Adebayor became the highest-paid player in Paraguayan history and the club's most iconic football signing.
Although he lacked discipline early on in his career, he became known for his ability to link up with teammates and make good runs behind defenders. His strength, pace, and technique lent to a playing style much like that of one of his major influences, Nwankwo Kanu, and he was described as both tall and good in the air.
