Mariah Carey and her now ex-fiancé James Packer made headlines last week when various news outlets reported that the couple had split. The Grammy Award winning songstress and billionaire businessman had been together for over a year, and had been engaged since January of this year, before calling it quits last week. Now that the pair are no longer together, Mariah wants to keep the engagement ring; and take some of Packer's money with her in the process.
According to sources, Carey is keeping the $10 million engagement ring that Packer gave to her. Packer reportedly let her keep the ring (what's $10 million to a billionaire anyway?). But that's not all that she wants as a souvenir from the relationship. She also wants $50 million from Packer. Why? Apparently, she wants the money for uprooting her life in Los Angeles to be with him, and the cancellation of the South American leg of her tour. She claims that the tour was cancelled because of the trauma caused by the breakup.
What caused the breakup is unclear, but it appears to be a combination of issues. Carey reportedly didn't attend the birthday party of Packer's sister in Australia earlier this year, which caused tension in Packer's family. Carey also was rumored to be hooking up with one of her backup dancers. In addition to the singer's extravagant spending habits, her upcoming reality TV show, "Mariah's World", was another factor that upset Packer.
"James had huge reservations about Mariah's new reality TV show and the fact that she was willing to expose their lives to the world," said a source to Page Six.
As for the $50 million Mariah is seeking? A source close to the couple said the following, "Of course Mariah wants money, but she's not getting $50 million. There's no negotiations about money because they haven't spoken since the split. He let her keep the ring, and she isn't getting a cent more. It is ridiculous to claim that James is the reason for the cancellation of her South America tour. A few days ago she blamed it on the promoters."
