King made her television debut in 2007 with a guest role on the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother." Two years later, she had guest roles on "Supernatural" and "Greek." King also began her longest-running role, as Caroline Forbes on the CW supernatural teen drama series "The Vampire Diaries." On the show, based on the book series of the same name, she starred alongside such other actors as Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham, and Zach Roerig. "The Vampire Diaries" was a big hit with audiences, running for eight seasons through 2017. King went on to reprise her role as Caroline Forbes in the fifth and final season of the "Vampire Diaries" spinoff series "The Originals," which aired in 2018. She reprised her role again in the final season of the second spinoff series, "Legacies," from 2021 to 2022.

During her time on "The Vampire Diaries," King appeared in an episode of the Lifetime series "Drop Dead Diva" in 2010, and in an episode of the improvisational comedy series "Whose Line is it Anyway?" in 2013.
