Chuck Hull was born in Clifton, Colorado, and went on to graduate from the University of Colorado with a BS in Engineering. He went on to develop what he called, "stereolithography", the process by which objects can be made by printing layer upon layer using a curable ultraviolet substance. The process is commonly referred to as 3D printing. In the mid-80s, he co-founded 3D Systems, a company devoted to rapid prototyping.
He is its Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. In addition to developing 3D printing and prototyping technology, he also developed the STL file format. He holds more than 60 patents in the United States, as well as similar patents covering ion optics and prototyping in a large number of other countries. In 2014, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
