He started his formal education at Sedberg School in Yorkshire. Later he enrolled at Oxford University where he studied history and then went to London University to study anthropology. Next, he became a lecturer and then a professor of anthropology at the Cambridge University. In 1986 he was introduced as a fellow at the British Academy.
