What is George Shinn's Net Worth?
George Shinn is an American businessman, sports team owner, author and motivational speaker who has a net worth of $120 million. Born on May 11, 1941 in Kannapolis, North Carolina, George Shinn is probably best known as the former owner of NBA team "Charlotte Hornets". A poor-achieving student who graduated last of his class at A.L. Brown High School, Shinn spent some time working in a carwash, in a textile mill and as a school janitor during his youth. However, he did graduate from Evans Business College and then started raising money to buy several schools and consolidate them into "Rutledge Education Systems". But instead, he sold the schools and used the proceedings to buy the Charlotte Hornets in 1987 for $32.5 million. Besides the Charlotte Hornets, Shinn also owned minor league baseball teams "Charlotte Kings" and "Gastonia Rangers" as well as the American football team Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks. In 1973 Shinn started The George Shinn Foundation in order to provide scholarships to deserving students.
The foundation presently aids with disaster-relief activities and donations as well. Shinn announced he had prostate cancer in 2009, but luckily beat the deadly disease by March 2010. Thus, the George Shinn foundation now focuses on raising awareness and early detection of prostate cancer. The foundation also educates young minsters of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute in North Carolina for their participation in ministries and relief in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Furthermore, he has authored several books, the most important ones being "The American Dream Still Works", "Leadership Development", and "You Gotta' Believe". In 2010, Shinn was not able to sell his shares of the Charlotte Hornets due to the team´s financial issues, so the NBA took over the sale. Shin has three grown-up children: Susan, Chad, and Chris and is currently married to Denise, who is the chair of the George Shinn Foundation.
