Queen Rania, also known as Rania Al Abdullah, is the queen consort of Jordan. She met her future husband, Prince Abdullah bin Al-Hussein, in 1993. They were married later that year. Upon his ascension to the throne in 1999, he became King Abdullah II.

During her reign, Queen Rania has been primarily focused on educational and health related initiatives and organizations, including founding an orphans' fund in 2003. She has also partnered with multiple universities in order to provide scholarships to students from Jordan who planned to finish their educations abroad, and she has served as a teacher. UNICEF and other global organizations have recognized her for her commitment to education and youth development. Rania has published the children's books "The King's Gift," "The Sandwich Swap," and "Enduring Beauty. "

Early Life

Queen Rania was born Rania Al-Yassin on August 31, 1970, in Kuwait City, Kuwait. She is the daughter of Palestinian parents. After graduating from the New English School, Kuwait, she earned a business administration from Cairo's American University. Rania then worked in marketing at Citibank before taking a job with Apple Inc. in Jordan.

Activities

Queen Rania is passionate about education, and in 2005, she established the Queen Rania Award for Excellence in Education, an annual award for teachers, with the Ministry of Education. She is the Chairperson of the first interactive children's museum in Jordan, and she launched the "Madrasati" ("My School") initiative to refurbish hundreds of Jordan's public schools in 2008. She founded The Queen Rania Al Abdullah Center for Educational Technology in 2001 and the Queen Rania Teacher Academy in 2009, and she is responsible for the Queen Rania Scholarship Program. She developed the Jordan River Children Program, which launched a Child Safety Program in 1998, and in 2003, she founded the Al-Aman Fund for the Future of Orphans. Rania is the Regional Ambassador of INJAZ Al-Arab, a nonprofit organization that "inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy." She founded the Royal Health Awareness Society in 2005, and she is the namesake of the Queen Rania Children's Hospital.

Queen Rania joined UNICEF's Global Leadership Initiative in 2000, and two years later, she became a member of the International Youth Foundation's Board of Directors. In 2007, UNICEF named her its first-ever Eminent Advocate for Children, and in 2009, she became an Honorary Global Chair of the United Nations Girls' Education Initiative. While visiting the U.S. in April 2009, Rania, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, and Gene Sperling, Counsellor to the Secretary of the Treasury, teamed up to launch "The Big Read" during the Global Campaign for Education's global action week. Later that year, she co-founded the "1GOAL: Education for All" campaign with former professional footballer Gary Lineker with the goal of "providing education for all children," especially those living in poverty. Rania became a member of the board of directors of the Foundation for International Community Assistance in 2003 and the United Nations Foundation in 2006, and in 2005, she was an emissary for the UN's International Year of Microcredit. In 2020, she was named to the Earthshot Prize Council, an environmental initiative started by Prince William that offers nearly $65 million to "whoever comes up with the best ideas to solve five of the world's biggest environmental challenges by 2030."

Personal Life

Rania and Prince Abdullah bin Al-Hussein met at a dinner party in early 1993, and they married at Zahran Palace on June 10, 1993. Prince Abdullah became King Abdullah II on February 7, 1999, and Rania was proclaimed queen on March 22nd of that year. Queen Rania and King Abdullah have four children: Crown Prince Hussein (born 1994), Princess Iman (born 1996), Princess Salma (born 2000), and Prince Hashem (born 2005). Rania has received honorary doctorates from the University of Exeter, UK (Law, 2001), the University of Jordan (Educational Sciences, 2008), the University of Malaya, Malaysia (International Relations, 2008), and the University of Sapienza, Italy (Science Development and International Cooperation, 2015).

Queen Rania's national honors include the Knight Grand Cordon with Collar of the Order of Al-Hussein bin Ali (1999) and the Knight Grand Cordon, Special Class of the Supreme Order of the Renaissance (2024). In Jordan Queen Rania and King Abdullah II split their time between Raghadan Palace in Amman, Jordan, and a family home in the Amman suburbs.

The Pandora Papers showed that they also own three oceanfront estates in Malibu, California, as well as properties in London, Ascot, and Washington, DC.
