Mithun Chakraborty is an Indian actor, producer, and former politician who has a net worth of $40 million. Mithun Chakraborty is known for his roles in such films as "Mrigayaa," "Disco Dancer," "Agneepath," and "Tahader Katha," among numerous others spanning six decades. He was previously a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha. Among his many other endeavors, Chakraborty owns the Monarch Group and the production company Paparatzy Productions.

Early Life and Education

Mithun Chakraborty was born as Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950 in Calcutta, India to Bengali Hindu parents Shanti and Basanta. After attending the Oriental Seminary, he went to Scottish Church College, from which he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Chakraborty went on to attend the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. A Naxalite before getting into the film business, he left the movement after his only brother was killed by electrocution in a freak accident.

Film Career in the 1970s and '80s

In 1976, Chakraborty made his film debut in Mrinal Sen's Hindi-language drama "Mrigayaa," starring opposite Mamata Shankar in her own film debut. For his performance, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor, making him the first and only person in history to win that award for his debut film. Also in 1976, Chakraborty had a brief part in "Do Anjaane." He went on to make his Bengali film debut in 1978 in the blockbuster "Nadi Theke Sagare." The same year, Chakraborty starred in the Hindi-language hit "Mera Rakshak." He continued to star in numerous successful Hindi-language films over the subsequent years, including "Surakksha," "Taraana," "Patita," "Hum Paanch," and "Hum Se Badkar Kaun." Also successful was the 1981 Bengali-language film "Kalankini Kankabati."

Chakraborty reached his greatest level of fame yet in 1982, when he starred in such major hit films as "Shaukeen," "Taqdeer Ka Badshah," "Swami Dada," "Troyee," and "Disco Dancer." Particularly successful was "Disco Dancer," an international blockbuster that also became the first Indian film to gross ₹1 billion. Chakraborty went on to star in a plethora of further commercial successes throughout the remainder of the decade. Among them were "Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye"; "Hum Se Hai Zamana"; "Ghar Ek Mandir"; "Jagir"; "Kasam Panda Karne Wale Ki"; "Pyar Jhukta Nahin"; "Ghulami"; and "Swarag Se Sunder."

Further Film Career

Chakraborty continued his commercial success in the 1990s, kicking things off with such hits as "Pati Patni Aur Tawaif" and "Humse Na Takrana." He also appeared in the eventual cult film "Agneepath," earning the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. Chakraborty's subsequent hits included "Trinetra," "Ghar Jamai," and "Dil Aashna Hai." He also starred in the Bengali film "Tahader Katha," for which he earned his second National Film Award for Best Actor. In 1993, Chakraborty starred in the blockbuster action films "Dalaal," "Phool Aur Angaar," and "Aadmi." Although his star had faded by the mid-1990s, he continued appearing in many films, most of them low-budget productions. His box-office hits during this time included "Cheetah," "Jallaad," and "Ravan Raaj: A True Story." During the second half of the decade, Chakraborty appeared in hundreds of films produced by his studio Mithun's Dream Factory. In 1998, he won his third National Film Award, this time for Best Supporting Actor, for his performance in "Swami Vivekananda."

Chakraborty mostly focused on Bengali films in the early 2000s, appearing in such acclaimed titles as "Chaka," "Titli," and "Santrash." He returned to mainstream Hindi films in 2005 with "Elaan" and "Lucky: No Time for Love," although both were flops. Chakraborty had a comeback in 2007 with his acclaimed performance in "Guru." Kicking off the 2010s, he had a massive box-office hit with "Golmaal 3." Chakraborty had further hits with "Housefull 2" and "Oh My God!," both in 2012, and "Kick," in 2014. In 2015, he made his Telugu-language film debut in "Gopala Gopala," and his Tamil-language film debut in "Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka." Chakraborty also appeared in the acclaimed Hindi drama "Hawaizaada." Later, in 2018, he made his Kannada-language film debut in the hit action thriller "The Villain." Closing out the decade, Chakraborty appeared in the sleeper hit "The Tashkent Files." His credits in the early 2020s include "12 'O' Clock," "The Kashmir Files," "Projapoti," and "Kabuliwala."

Television Career

In 2009, Chakraborty became the head judge on the Hindi dance competition reality television series "Dance India Dance," based on the Bengali show "Dance Bangla Dance." He remained on the program until 2018. Meanwhile, in 2012, Chakraborty hosted the Bengali quiz show "Dadagiri Unlimited," and in 2013 he hosted the Bengali version of "Bigg Boss." From 2017 to 2018, he appeared on the comedy show "The Drama Company." Among his other television credits, Chakraborty was a judge on the reality show "Hunarbaaz: Desh Ki Shaan," and a main cast member in the Amazon Prime Video series "Bestseller."

Political Career

In early 2014, Chakraborty became a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha after he was nominated by All India Trinamool Congress founder Mamata Banerjee. He served in the Rajya Sabha until his resignation in late 2016. In 2021, ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Chakraborty joined the rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party.

Personal Life

For four months in 1979, Chakraborty was married to actress Helena Luke. After their divorce, he wed actress Yogeeta Bali. Together, they have four children: Mimoh, Ushmey, Namashi, and Dishani.

In early 2024, Chakraborty was hospitalized for chest pain that was determined to be the result of a stroke. He was discharged a couple of days later.
