Leonid Simanovsky is a Russian businessman who has a net worth of $1.1 billion. He is the co-founder of Novatek, a gas company which was set up as OAO FIK Novafininvest in 1994. It was back in the 1980s that Simanovsky met his future his partner in Novatek, Leonid Mikhelson, a deputy of Mikhelson's in a construction company. They seemed to be a perfect business match with Simanovsky who had worked as a fitter in a factory producing space rocket technology at the time. Today, Novatek is the largest independent natural gas producer in Russia.
Simanovsky, who draws part of his net worth from Novatek, now holds just under 2% in the gas company, whereas he had a 6% stake in it at the time of its initial public offering, in 2005. In addition to Novatek, Simanovsky and Mikhelson control the First United Bank. Also present on the political scene in Russia, Simanovsky has been a State Duma deputy and a member of Vladimir Putin's Yedinaya Rossiya (United Russia) party since 2003. Furthermore, he is a deputy chairman of the Duma's budget and tax committee.
