James Leininger is an American physician and businessman who has a net worth of $1.3 billion. A former emergency room doctor, Leininger is the founder of Kinetic Concepts (KCI), a global medical technology corporation that offers a wide palette of products related to wounds and wound healing. Born James R. Leininger in 1944, he took both his Bachelor's and Master's degree from Indiana University, in 1965 and 1969, respectfully. Upon graduation, he spent some time working as an emergency room doctor, but started to accumulate his net worth of $1.3 billion when he started KCI in 1976. However, he is no longer owner of the company that he set up in a one-bedroom apartment. In November 2012, a consortium of private equity firms headed by Apax Partners inked a $6.3 billion acquisition of the company.
Up to that point, Leininger was the largest individual shareholder and then he had to sell his stake as Apax took KCI private. But still, he continues to serve as Chairman Emeritus on the company's Board of Directors. In addition to KCI, Leininger also cofounded Renal Care Group and ATX Technologies, where he served on the Board of Directors from 1994. Nowadays Leininger is devoted to investing mainly through his Medcare Investment Funds, which manage a total of $1 billion in assets. Apart from supporting school reform, he is a longtime donor to Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Also a basketball enthusiast, he is part-owner of the San Antonio Sports.
