He played for the Pistons from 2000 to 2001, followed by the Sacramento Kings from 2001 to 2003, Huntsville Flight (D-League) from 2003 to 2004, the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2004, Seattle SuperSonics form 2004 to 2006, the Fayetteville Patriots (D-League) in 2006, UNICS Kazan (Russia) from 2006 to 2007, Bakersfield Jam (D-League) in 2007, Panionos (Greece) from 2007 to 2008, and lastly Bakersfield Jam (D-League) from 2008 to 2009.

Cleaves was an NCAA Champion in 2000, the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player in 2000, a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999, was a Consensus First Team All-American in 1999, a two-time Consensus Second Team All-American from 1998 to 2000, and was a McDonald's All-American in 1996. He competed in the FIBA World Championship with Greece in 1998 and received a bronze medal. In 2010, Cleaves became a Detroit Pistons studio analyst for Fox Sports Detroit. He currently owns a record label called All Varsity Entertainment and features Jon Connor.
