Chet has appeared in the films "Bratz" (2007), "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008), "Larry Crowne" (2011), "Project X" (2012), and "Fantastic Four" (2015) and on television shows such as "Maron" (2016), "Shameless" (2016–2018), "Empire" (2018–2019), and "Your Honor" (2020–2021). As a rapper, Haze recorded a remix of Wiz Khalifa's 2010 song "Black and Yellow" entitled "White and Purple" when he was in college, and in 2018, he released "Ocean Park EP" with his friend Drew Arthur under the name FTRZ.

Early Life

Chet Haze was born Chester Marlon Hanks on August 4, 1990, in Los Angeles, California. He is Tom Hanks' third child and the first child of Tom and his second wife, Rita Wilson. Chet has a brother named Truman and two half-siblings, Colin Hanks and Elizabeth. When Haze was in high school, his parents sent him to a wilderness therapy program, Second Nature, that was meant for troubled teens. Chet attended the therapeutic boarding school the Oakley School, where he played lacrosse, then he enrolled at Northwestern University to study theater. As a Northwestern student, Haze joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Career

Chet made his acting debut in the 2007 film "Bratz," and in 2008, he appeared in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the fourth film in the "Indiana Jones" franchise. In 2011, he played a pizza delivery boy in the romantic comedy "Larry Crowne," which starred his father and Julia Roberts. That year he also recorded the song "White and Purple," changing the lyrics of Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" to refer to Northwestern's school colors. In 2012, he appeared in the found footage film "Project X," which grossed $102.7 million against a $12 million budget. In 2015, Chet played Jimmy Grimm, the older brother of Ben Grimm / The Thing, in the superhero film "Fantastic Four." In 2016, he met Drew Arthur, and they formed a musical duo called FTRZ, releasing the "Ocean Park EP" and the singles "NowhereLand" and "Models" in 2018. They later changed the name FTRZ to Something Out West and released the singles "Ticket Out My Head" and "Harley" in 2020.

From 2016 to 2018, Haze played Charlie in seven episodes of the Showtime series "Shameless," and in 2016, he had a recurring role as Trey on IFC's "Maron." He guest-starred on "Tales" (2017), "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2017), "NCIS: New Orleans" (2021), and "Atlanta" (2022), and in 2018, he landed a recurring role as rapper Blake Sterling during the fourth season of the Fox drama "Empire." Chet was promoted to a main cast member for season five, appearing in 17 episodes of the series all total. In 2020, he had a small role in the war film "Greyhound" alongside his father, and from 2020 to 2021, he co-starred with Bryan Cranston and Hope Davis on the Showtime series "Your Honor." Though "Your Honor" was originally intended to be a miniseries, it was renewed for a second season in August 2021.

Personal Life

Chet has a daughter named Micaiah, who was born in April 2016. Micaiah's mother is Haze's former partner Tiffany Miles. Chet has credited his daughter with helping him get sober, telling "Entertainment Tonight" in 2018, "It was the prospect of having a kid, and I knew that in nine months there's gonna be a baby here. That gave me the motivation to be like, 'OK, I've had my time now, and I need to move on.'" He added that his parents have supported him through his sobriety journey, saying, "They couldn't be more supportive. Every step of the way… They've always been there for me and I'm really lucky." In 2020, Haze was granted Greek citizenship, along with his parents and brother, for Tom and Rita's work raising awareness for the Attica wildfires of 2018. During the summer of 2020, Chet expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement on Instagram, and later that year he took a break from social media due to "pro-Trump conspiracy theorists" targeting the Hanks family. When he returned to Instagram in November 2020, he posted an anti-Trump video on the day Joe Biden was projected the winner of the presidential election.

In 2015, Haze was wanted by police after he inflicted $1,800 in damages on a hotel room near London Gatwick Airport. Later that year, he went to rehab for cocaine addiction. In January 2021, a Texas judge granted Chet's ex-girlfriend Kiana Parker a temporary protective order against him after she accused him of physical and verbal abuse. In March 2021, Haze sued Parker for assault, battery, theft, and conversion stemming from a January altercation between the two. Chet's attorney told "People" magazine, "The day after Chet Hanks confronted Kiana Parker about stealing money from his credit card, while Ms. Parker was accompanied by a huge male carrying a gun, she viciously attacked Chet with a knife, which caused him to profusely bleed. It is all on video and the undisputed video tells the whole story. Her claims are completely false, fabricated and fictional." Around this time, Haze shared a video on Instagram declaring that the summer of 2021 would be a "white boy summer," and the merchandise he released featuring the expression was criticized because the font was similar to fonts used by white nationalist groups. In August 2021, he posted a video on Instagram in which he urged his followers to get the COVID-19 vaccination, then said he was joking and that he wasn't vaccinated. Chet was criticized for these comments because his parents had contracted COVID-19 in 2020 and had encouraged others to get the vaccination.
