Nessler's career beginnings date back to 1980, when he served as sports anchor and talk-show host for WGST-Radio in Atlanta. After five years, he became a sports director at WSB-Radio, again in Atlanta. This period (1980-1985), he worked on Georgia Tech basketball broadcasts and he also was the radio voice of the Peach Bowl. Then Nessler handled play-by-play duties for the Atlanta Falcons (1982-1988), before acquiring the same duty for the Minnesota Vikings on WCCO-Radio in Minneapolis, from 1988 to 1989.
