Sarah Rafferty was born Sarah Gray Rafferty on December 6, 1972, in New Canaan, Connecticut. She is the daughter of Mary Lee Rafferty and Michael Griffin Rafferty Jr., and she has three older sisters, Ann, Maura, and Constance.
