Early Life and Education
Sanjay Dutt was born on July 29, 1959 in Bombay, India to Sunil and Nargis, both actors and politicians. His father was a Punjabi Hindu and his mother was a Muslim of Punjabi descent. He has two sisters named Priya and Namrata.
Film Career in the 1980s and '90s
At 12 years of age, Dutt made his film debut with a brief singing appearance in his father's 1971 crime drama "Reshma Aur Shera." A decade later, he made his Bollywood debut in his father's romantic action film "Rocky." Dutt had his career breakthrough in 1982 when he appeared in "Vidhaata," the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. His credits in the years after that included "Main Awara Hoon," "Zameen Aasmaan," "Mera Faisla," and "Jaan Ki Baazi." However, Dutt's next major box-office hit was the 1986 crime thriller "Naam," which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the decade. He continued his success with such films as "Inaam Dus Hazaar," "Jeete Hain Shaan Se," "Ilaaka," "Kanoon Apna Apna," and "Taaqatwar." Dutt also gave acclaimed performances in "Kabzaa" and "Hathyar."

Film Career in the 21st Century
Dutt remained prolific going into the 21st century. In 2000, he appeared in eight films, including "Mission Kashmir," for which he earned another Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor. Dutt's subsequent credits included "Jodi No.1," "Pitaah," "Annarth," and "Kaante," the lattermost of which garnered him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for his starring role in the 2003 film "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.," which was a massive critical and commercial success. Dutt later reprised his role in the 2006 sequel "Lage Raho Munna Bhai," another huge hit. Meanwhile, he had success with such films as "Musafir," "Plan," "Parineeta," "Dus," and "Shabd." Toward the end of the decade, Dutt appeared in "Dhamaal," "Mehbooba," "Kidnap," "EMI," "Blue," "All the Best: Fun Begins," and "Aladin," among other titles.

Other Activities
Among his other activities, Dutt co-hosted the fifth season of the Indian reality television show "Bigg Boss" with Salman Khan. Around the same time, he and Raj Kundra created India's first professionally organized mixed martial arts league, Super Fight League. The league ended in 2018.
1993 Bombay Bombings and Imprisonment
Amid the 1993 Bombay bombings, Dutt was arrested for possession of illegal weapons he had allegedly acquired from some of the Bollywood figures implicated in the attacks. Although he was granted bail the next month, he was re-arrested in 1994. Dutt was again granted bail in 1995. Later, in 2007, he was sentenced to six years in prison under the Arms Act; however, he was again granted bail. In 2013, Dutt's sentence was shortened to five years. Because he had already spent some of that time in jail and on parole, and due to further bails in 2015 and 2016, he was released in early 2016.
Personal Life
Dutt married his first wife, actress and model Richa Sharma, in 1987. They had a daughter named Trishala. Sharma passed away from a brain tumor in 1996. Dutt went on to wed model Rhea Pillai in 1998; they divorced a decade later. He then married actress and entrepreneur Manyata, with whom he has boy-and-girl twins.
