Early Life

Tracy Nelson was born Tracy Kristine Nelson on October 25, 1963, in Santa Monica, California. Her mother, Kristin, was an actress and painter, and her father, Ricky, was a musician and actor. Ricky tragically died in a 1985 plane crash at the age of 45, and Kristin passed away from a heart attack in 2018 at the age of 72. Kristin was the sister of actor Mark Harmon and model/actress Kelly Harmon, and Ricky was the son of actors Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. Tracy is the older sister of Gunnar and Matthew Nelson (of the rock duo Nelson) and Sam Nelson, and her parents divorced in 1982. Tracy attended The Buckley School before graduating from the Westlake School for Girls (now known as Harvard-Westlake School) in 1981. She then studied Dance and European History at Bard College in New York.

Career

When Tracy was four years old, she played one of Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda's daughters in the 1968 film "Yours, Mine and Ours." Nelson studied ballet with Tania Lachine, and she began touring California with a dance company when she was in grammar school. She also studied theatre with Nina Foch and Kim Stanley, and she performed in The Edinburgh Fringe Festival after her high school graduation. From 1982 to 1983, Tracy starred as Jennifer DiNuccio on the CBS sitcom "Square Pegs," and from 1984 to 1985, she played Angela Timini on the ABC drama "Glitter" and had a recurring role as Deena Marx on NBC's "Family Ties." Around this time, she guest-starred on "Hotel" (1983), "St. Elsewhere" (1984), and "The Love Boat" (1985). From 1989 to 1991, Nelson played Sister Stephanie "Steve" Oskowski on the NBC/ABC series "Father Dowling Mysteries." In the '80s, she also appeared in the films "Maria's Lovers" (1984) and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (1986) and the TV movies "Pleasures" (1986), "Kate's Secret" (1986), "Home" (1987), "Tonight's the Night" (1987), "If It's Tuesday, It Still Must Be Belgium" (1987), and the "Father Dowling Mysteries" precursor "Fatal Confession" (1987). Personal Life

Tracy married fellow actor William R. Moses on July 25, 1987, and they welcomed daughter Remington in 1992. Nelson and Moses divorced in late 1997, and in 2001, Tracy had a son named Elijah with Chris Clark. Nelson has been diagnosed with three different types of cancer throughout her life. In 1987, she was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's lymphoma. After undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, Tracy went into remission. In 2005, she was diagnosed  with thyroid cancer, followed by a breast cancer diagnosis five years later. After her breast cancer diagnosis, she underwent a bilateral mastectomy. Nelson is an advocate for cancer research and has served as a spokesperson for The Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, which honored her with a Lifesaver Award. She has also received the Amie Karen Cancer Fund for Children's Jill Ireland Award.
