What Is Kyle Shanahan's Net Worth and Salary?

Kyle Shanahan is an American professional football coach who has a net worth of $16 million.

He is the son of former NFL head coach Mike Shanahan, and he was a wide receiver at the University of Texas at Austin. As a coach, Shanahan started out as a graduate assistant at UCLA in 2003. He was an offensive quality control coach for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004 to 2005. Kyle was a wide receivers coach for the Houston Texans in 2005 and then was the team's quarterbacks coach in 2007 and offensive coordinator from 2008 to 2009. He was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins from 2010 to 2013, for the Cleveland Browns in 2014, and for the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2016. Shanahan became the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, and the team played in Super Bowl LIV on February 2, 2020, and has made it to three NFC Championship Games with Kyle as their coach. Shanahan was named the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016.

Contracts & Salary

In 2017, Kyle Shanahan signed a six-year, $21 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Under that deal, Shanahan's annual salary was $3.5 million. This contract contained milestone bonuses that could have resulted in several million more dollars over the life of the deal. In 2023, Kyle signed an extension that keeps him with the 49ers through 2027 and upped his salary to $14 million per year.

Early Life

Kyle Shanahan was born Kyle Michael Shanahan on December 14, 1979, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the son of Peggy and Mike Shanahan, and he has a sister named Krystal. Mike was working as a football coach at the University of Minnesota when Kyle was born, and he went on to coach the NFL teams the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Redskins. Shanahan attended California's Saratoga High School and Colorado's Cherry Creek High School, and he earned a scholarship to Duke University. He transferred to the University of Texas at Austin as a redshirt freshman, and he served as a wide receiver on the school's football team.

Career

After graduating from college in 2003, Kyle became a graduate assistant to UCLA Bruins coach Karl Dorrell. In 2004, he was hired to be the offensive quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under coach Jon Gruden. In 2006, Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak hired Shanahan as the team's wide receivers coach, making Kyle the NFL's youngest position coach. The following season he was promoted to quarterback coach, and in early 2008, he became the NFL's youngest offensive coordinator at the age of 28. Shanahan left the team in 2010 to join the Washington Redskins, which his father coached at the time. In 2012, the NFL fined Kyle $25,000 for his behavior toward replacement officials after a game. According to CBS Sports, "Shanahan chased the officials into the tunnel following the Redskins loss to the Bengals (he was apparently incensed at the unsportsmanlike penalty he received near the end of the game) and reportedly said some NSFW things to the guys in stripes." In December 2013, Kyle and his father were fired from the Redskins. In 2014, Shanahan was hired to be the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator, but he resigned in January 2015 because he reportedly "did not see eye to eye with the front office about quarterback Johnny Manziel."

They played in Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017, losing to the New England Patriots 34–28. For the 2016 season, Shanahan was named NFL Assistant Coach of the Year. A day after the Super Bowl, Kyle signed a six-year contract to be the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. In 2019, the team won the NFC West division title and the NFC Championship. They played in Super Bowl LIV on February 2, 2020, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 31–20. Shanahan signed a six-year contract extension in June 2020. In September 2020, he was fined $100,000 for not following proper face mask protocol during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was fined $50,000 in July 2021 for "organized team activities violations." The 49ers made it to the NFC Championship in 2021 and 2022 and won the 2022 NFC West title. Before the 2023 season began, Kyle signed a contract extension that would keep him with the team through 2027.

Personal Life

Kyle married Mandy Maureen O'Donnell on July 3, 2005. Kyle and Mandy met at Cherry Creek High School, and they have three children, daughters Lexi and Stella and son Carter. On the "Bleacher Report" podcast in May 2018, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms claimed that Shanahan named his son after rapper Lil Wayne, whose birth name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. Simms stated, "He was obsessed with Lil Wayne my early years in the NFL. Kyle's one of those guys, if you're hanging and we're drinking some beers or whatever, he's got to control the music. And he has A.D.D., so we can never actually listen to a full song." Simms' co-host, Adam Lefkoe, asked, "But Lil Wayne was played the most?," to which Chris replied, "Oh my gosh, yes. So he named his little boy Carter."

Real Estate

In 2017, Shanahan paid $6.8 million for a six-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom home in Saratoga, California. The home was built in 2006, and Kyle bought it from former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer. The mansion sits on 1.5 acres of land, and the property includes a bocce court, an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, and a small vineyard.
