Trestman was a quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers where he served as backup for former NFL coach Tony Dungy. He also played at Minnesota State University Moorhead and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. He started his coaching career at the University of Miami where he served as a quarterbacks coach. From 1985 to 1986 Trestman was running backs coach for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. He was quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1977 and for the Cleveland Browns from 1988 to 199 where he also served as offensive coordinator.
Trestman was quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 1990 to 1991 and then returned to coaching as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 1995 to 1996. He was quarterbacks coach of the Detroit Lions in 1987 and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 1998 to 2000. Trestman was quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders from 2001 to 2003. He was an assistant head coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2004 and offensive coordinator at North Carolina State from 2005 to 2006. His first head coaching job came with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes from 2008 to 2012 and he got his first NFL head coaching job with the Chicago Bears in 2013. Trestman was the 2009 CFL Coach of the Year and won the Grey Cup Championship in 2009 and 2010. In 2017 he became head coach of the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
