Cory Spinks was born in St. Louis, Missouri in February 1978. Cory is the son of former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks and the nephew of former light heavyweight champion Michael Spinks. As an amateur Cory won the National Golden Gloves and National Police Athletic League welterweight championships in 1997. He had a record of 29-2 and then unified the WBA, WBC, IBF, and Ring Magazine welterweight titles in December 2003 by defeating Ricardo Mayorga. In February 2005 Spinks lost the four welterweight titles to Zab Judah.
He defeated Roman Karmazin in July 2006 to win the IBF World Light Middleweight title and later lost it to Verno Phillips in March 2008. Spinks won the vacant title again in April 2009 by defeating Deandre Latimore before losing it to Cornelius Bundrage in August 2010. His last fight was a loss to Carlos Amado Molina in February 2012 which brought his record to 39-8 with 11 knockouts.
