He was a striker and goalkeeper who started his career for Pumas in 1988 where he played until 1995 and scored 31 goals in 183 appearances. Campos played for Atlante from 1995 to 1996 and then for the Los Angeles Galaxy from 1996 to 1997. In 1997 he played for Cruz Azul and in 1998 for the Chicago Fire. He played again for Pumas from 1998 to 1999 and then for UANL from 1999 to 2000. He rejoined Pumas from 2000 to 2001 and then Atlante from 2001 to 2002 before finishing his career with Puebla from 2002 to 2004. Campos finished his professional career with 433 appearances.

He won the Primera Division in 1990-91 and the Primera Division Invierno in 1997. For the Chicago Fire he won the MLS Cup and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1998. Campos also represented Mexico in international competition from 1991 to 2004 where he appeared in 130 matches. He won CONCACAF Gold Cups in 1993 and 1996 and a FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999. He was Mexico's first choice goalkeeper for the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups. After retiring he became an assistant coach for the Mexican National Team from 2004 to 2006. He has appeared in a Nike ad and owns a fast food franchise.
