Forrest Mars was an American businessman who had a net worth of $24.4 billion dollars. Forrest Edward Mars, Sr. was born in Wadena, Minnesota in March 1904 and passed away in July 1999. He is best known for Mars candy which includes M&M's and the Mars bar. He earned a degree in industrial engineering from Yale University in 1928. Mars estranged from his father and took a buyout for Mars, Inc. He moved to England where he created the Mars bar. While in Europe he worked for Nestle and the Tobler Company. Mars returned to the U.S. and started Food Products Manufacturing. He developed Uncle Ben's Rice and Pedigree. In 1940 he developed M&M's with Bruce Murrie. Although Mars was allergic to peanuts peanut M&M's were created in 1954. When Forest's father died in 1964 he took over Mars, Inc. and merged it with his own company. He retired in 1973 and turned the business over to his children Forrest Jr., John, and Jacqueline who he had with his wife Audrey Ruth Meyer. While he was retired Mars founded Ethel M Chocolates which was purchased by Mars, Inc. in 1988. Forrest Mars died on July 1, 1999 at the age of 95. He had been ranked the 30th richest American, with his sons Forrest, Jr. and John being 29th and 31st.
